Little Echoes

Discover a piece of forgotten history; an ancient Orbis relic of wondrous technology. Find The Machine and unlock the ability to craft its Echoes, little helpers who can be assigned to tasks. What will you have them do?

(current working gameplay)

  • Purchased The Machine from the Hub Area via the Merchant, for 20 void essence(WIP: explore the world to discover the Fortress Ruins, and find the Machine within)
  • At The Machine, Craft two or more Waypoint Runes with rubble and flower petals. Each color will symbolize a different profession for your Echo.(currently implemented: red {guard} & yellow {lumberjack})
  • Craft an Echo's core with 1 colored Waypoint Rune + 100 essence (wip: +profession's tool)
  • Place one or more Waypoint Runestones on the ground for your Echo to path to
  • Spawn your new companions!

Lore Description:

Echoes are beings woven from a complicated blend of physical particulate matter, and raw essence. This energy binds their partially corporeal bodies together, allowing them limited ability to interact with the physical world. They are immune to physical damage, however they will eventually fade and crumble as the life essence binding them is used up.

Echoes target and path to navigational Runes that are placed in the local area; with one rune in range, they idle in place until something triggers them to react. Perfect for guard posts or idling lumberjacks waiting for trees to grow. If more runes are detected nearby, they wander randomly between runes.

Guard Echoes (red) will look for the nearest hostile mob to fight. They cast an Area of Effect to damage enemies, pummeling their bodies with invisible sonic vibrations. Currently, Skeletons and Zombies are the only recognized targets.

Wanderer Echoes (yellow) will simply wander randomly between nodes, providing a sense of liveliness to the area!

Crafting Recipes: (Crafted at The Machine)

Rubble (any color) + red flower petals = Guard rune Rubble (any color) + yellow flower petals = Wanderer rune

Cut/Future Concepts:

  • Custom ruins with a mechanical boss who, upon death, drops The Machine Core, which is used to build The Machine.
  • Lumberjack, Archer, Fisher, Farmer, Chest sorting, Stablehand (harvest livestock goods; AOE heals tamed mobs)
  • Echo mount (mechanical creature that can be ridden)
  • The Machine can be corrupted, causing hostile Echoes to spawn that provide unique drops. Do you keep The Machine pure and safe... or do you dabble in the dark side, and gamble on the balancing act of avoiding a base infestation?

Developer's Note: Originally I intended to showcase just how much could be done using only asset packs and no Java code. As time progressed, I expanded this to include additional Java-driven features usable in asset packs, but the core of everything here is still 95% asset-driven. With more time and patience, I expect much of the content cut due to time to return, if there's interest.
